The Mills is a landmark revitalization project completed in 2018, conceived and constructed by Nan Fung Group who were at the heart of the textile manufacturing industry in Hong Kong in the 1950s and operated one of the leading cotton spinning factories. The Mills pays homage to the history of industrial innovation by converting the now-dormant factories into a hub for technological and cultural innovation. The three former mills have now been combined into a single, cohesive complex covering roughly 260,000 square feet, housing the Center for Heritage Arts & Textile (CHAT), Fabrica(an incubator, fund and space/lab/store), and Shopfloor.
During the tour, members of Asia Society Hong Kong Center can discover The Mills’ vision and history and explore the continuity of an authentic Hong Kong story, where themes of textile and industry are woven into experiences of innovation, culture, and learning. Mr. Ray Zee, Chief Designer, Nan Fung Development Ltd. will walk us through the old to the new from an architectural context.
Another part of the heritage conservation project of The Mills is the Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT). Members will visit Unfolding : Fabric of Our Life CHAT’s inaugural special exhibition which showcases the works and performances by 17 contemporary artists and collectives who use textile as a testimony of faded facts in modern history, hidden sociopolitical agendas and personal and collective experiences of textile labor in the era of accelerated globalization.
After the tour, members are invited to join us for a tea sampling experience with the Man Cha Teas housed inside The Mills.
Since 2009, Mr. Ray Zee has been leading the Nan Fung Design Department as Chief Designer on projects spanning from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and other areas across China to Singapore, London, and New York.
Ray was the lead designer of the recently completed innovative mixed-use project, The Mills in Tsuen Wan in which a series of previously disused factories have been renovated and repurposed into a retail, exhibition, co-work and artists' incubator space in Tsuen Wan. The design preserves the original buildings and their 50 plus year history, while enhancing the facilities to meet the latest sustainability performance and weaving the new complex together with the neighborhood through a series of new entrances, lanes and bridges
Ray Zee has practiced internationally for 30 years specializing in the areas of office, residential, hotel, commercial and civic projects. His background has included extended professional periods in the offices of IM Pei and Sir Norman Foster. He received his architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
