Violet and Flavia_KV

Conversation between Artists Violet Shum and Flavia Robalo, moderated by Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s Head of Gallery & Exhibitions, Joyce Ng.

Free registration

Organized by Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Artist to Artist: Cultural Exchange is a series of 5 online conversations between two artists who have collaborated on the Fusion project. As a cultural exchange project, each artist was able to choose their preferred collaborative partner, working not only on their own sculptures but also on their partners’. The sculptural works currently exhibited at Asia Society Hong Kong Center are the result of an unprecedented collaboration between artists who, with humility and enthusiasm, have accepted to place their own creations in the hands of another artist they had never met.

Join us on Zoom to hear from paired artists, Violet Shum from Hong Kong and Flavia Robalo, from Argentina and based in Italy, who will share the concept, details and creation process of their sculptures.

Violet Shum

Violet Shum is a Hong Kong-based visual artist. She spent her early years studying painting from a portrait artist, Wong Kum. In 2003, she earned her Bachelor Degree of Arts in Fine Art from the RMIT University, in 2016 earned her Degree of Master of Arts in Philosophy from Hong Kong Chinese University and in 2017 she attended an Art Specialist Course of Sculpture at Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. Some of her works were collected by private collectors. Shum is interested in transforming industrial materials, such as stainless-steel mesh and wire. Natural elements also play a part in her works, giving her a multi-faceted platform to show an intertwined world of digital tech and natural beauty.

Flavia Robalo

Flavia Robalo started studying painting and sculpture in 1984. In 1991, she deepened her marble carving skills as a pupil and assistant of the sculptor Orio Dal Porto. In 1997 she embarked on her first trip to Pietrasanta in Italy, where she continued her training as a sculptor and where she began to exhibit her works in a succession of symposia and artistic activities. This path led her to obtain international recognition and awards related to her work over the years all over the world.
