Launched in 1999, Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival (HKJFF) was the first ever festival of its kind in Asia. This year is the 19th Anniversary of the festival. Asia Society Hong Kong Center continues to co-present with HKJFF to our members and audience a selection of world class films encompassing a diverse range of topics and Asian premieres.
This year the festival kicks off with a nail biting thriller Shelter directed by veteran film maker Eran Riklis with standout performances by an award-winning cast. Other Festival highlights include: the first biker flick-meets-holocaust feature documentary Back to Berlin which tells the story of eleven motor bikers who have a mission to take the Maccabiah torch from Israel to the site of the infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics, for the first Jewish Olympic Games on German soil; the multi award winning tender and sweet film The Cakemaker; the emotional drama The Last Suit which tells the story of an 88-year old Jewish tailor who leaves Buenos Aires for Poland, to try to find the man who saved him from a certain death after surviving Auschwitz; the gripping Israeli series Your Honour with unforeseen plot twists that has already been optioned for a US remake; the fascinating Why the Jews a powerful contemporary adaptation of the biblical story; and six selected shorts with a mix of poignant, sad, funny, dramatic and satirical stories.
