Gen A Explainer | Tensions in the Taiwan Strait
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAre we on the verge of geopolitical war in the Taiwan Strait?
Since the re-election of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in early 2020, China’s military pressure on Taiwan has been rising. While unification under the One China Principle remains at an impasse between Beijing and Taipei, U.S.-Taiwan ties are strengthening under a new U.S. administration with greater diplomatic recognition, high-level visitations and increased medical aid dominating headlines of late. So, are these increased military provocations from China geopolitical retaliation? Where does Australia sit in all of this if our diplomatic line is still the One China Policy? Actually, what even is the One China Policy?
Join Natasha Kassam, director of the Public Opinion and Foreign Policy Program at the Lowy Institute, in conversation with Gen A Ashley Brosnan, manager, Economics & Analysis at Austrade, on Wednesday July 7 for a Gen A Explainer on the origins of the China-Taiwan divide, Beijing’s “one country, two systems” principle, how the island of Taiwan is rapidly becoming a dangerous flashpoint in the intensifying U.S.-China rivalry, and what this means for Australia’s position in the region. As a senior leading woman in the foreign policy in Australia, Natasha will also share insights from her Asia-engaged career journey to date.
