Board and Advisory Council Appointments
Asia Society is pleased to announce the appointments of Andrew Michlemore AO, Evie Bruce and Grant Dooley to the Board of Directors of Asia Society Australia.
Asia Society also announced the appointments of: Nicole Brigg (Pro Vice-Chancellor, International, Macquarie University), Cathryn Carver (Executive General Manager, Client Coverage, National Australia Bank), Karen Fifer (Managing Partner, Consumer Markets Asia, Heidrick & Struggles) and Andrew MacIntyre (Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President, Global Development Portfolio at RMIT University) to the Advisory Council of Asia Society Australia.
The new appointments coincide with a continuing strategic renewal of Asia Society Australia as the nation’s fastest-growing and most dynamic centre of policy, business and education dedicated to the Asia-Pacific region.
Melbourne-based Andrew Michlemore AO, one of Australia's leading mining executives will take on the role of Deputy Chair, alongside current Deputy Chair, Alexandra Holcomb.
The new appointments bring invaluable experience across the resources, international education, banking and professional services sectors along with deep connections and practical experience in the region, and also strengthen Asia Society's strategic partnership with Victoria.

Board appointments
Andrew Michlemore AO, Deputy Chair
Andrew Michelmore was Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MMG Limited from 2009 until February 2017 following his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Zinifex Limited and then OZ Minerals Limited. Prior to this he spent two years working in London and Russia as Chief Executive Officer of EN+ Group and became interim Chairman of RUSAL, an EN+ portfolio company, in October 2006. Andrew has more than 35 years’ experience in the metals and mining industry. He spent 12 years at WMC where he was Chief Executive Officer and prior to that held senior roles in the company’s nickel, gold, alumina, copper, uranium and fertiliser businesses. He holds a First Class Honours degree in Engineering (Chemical) from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Arts in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University. He is a Rhodes Scholar and a fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Andrew is Chairman of the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health and Chairman of the Council of Ormond College at the University of Melbourne. Andrew is also a Director of China Matters and Deputy Chair of the Asia Society Australia. He was Chairman of the International Zinc Association (IZA) from October 2011 to December 2015, Chairman of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) from June 2013 to June 2016 and Chairman of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) from October 2015 until his resignation in May 2017.
Evie Bruce
Evie Bruce is the Australian Managing Partner for King & Wood Mallesons’ Mergers & Acquisitions and Banking & Finance practice teams. She also leads the firm’s Financial Institutions sector team.
Prior to joining the executive team, she led a successful practice specialising in M&A (public and private M&A, schemes of arrangement, reconstructions and joint ventures) and capital markets (IPOs, secondary capital raisings and hybrid and retail debt securities offerings). Evie has extensive experience advising large companies and emerging enterprises across a range of sectors, including financial services, private equity and infrastructure.
Evie was ranked by Chambers, in its list of 40 Outstanding Young Partners in the Asia Pacific for 2014 and is also ranked in various other legal industry publications including Best Lawyers in Australia, Who's Who Legal and The International Who’s Who of Capital Markets Lawyers.
Evie has written columns on trends in M&A for the Australian Financial Review and has been a Visiting Lecturer at Monash University teaching a course in equity capital markets law. Evie is also a relationship partner for a number of King & Wood Mallesons’ key clients and a member of the Corporations Committee of the Law Council of Australia.
Grant Dooley
Grant is the Executive Director and the Head of Asia Business Group for Hastings, with over 25 years of industry experience he leads operations in Asia, including Hastings’ business development, institutional relationship building and fundraising activities in the Asian market.
Prior to joining Hastings, Grant was Australia’s Consul-General n Guangzhou, China. As Consul-General, Grant led a 120-strong team responsible for all aspects of Australia’s relationship with south China including trade development, investment attraction and political relations. This included building effective relationships with senior Chinese Party leaders, government officials and leading Chinese State-owned enterprises and private-sector companies to promote Australian Government policies and commercial interests. Previous to his role as Consul-General in Guangzhou, Grant was a Director of the China Trade and Economic area at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra and, prior to this role, served the Australian Government overseas in Jakarta, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. Grant has a Masters of International Affairs and a Bachelor of Asian Studies (with majors in Mandarin Chinese and Asian History) from the Australian National University.
Advisory Council appointments
Professor Andrew MacIntyre is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President, Global Development Portfolio at RMIT University in Melbourne. Prior to joining RMIT, he was Professor of Political Science at the Australian National University, where he also served as Dean of the College and Director of the Research School of Asia & the Pacific, and earlier founding Director of the Crawford School of Public Policy.
Karen Fifer is Heidrick & Struggles’ managing partner of the Consumer Markets Practice for Asia Pacific and the Middle East. She previously served as global managing partner for the Consumer Markets Practice, global sector leader for Retail and partner in charge of the Hong Kong office. Karen is an accomplished consultant with close to three decades of experience in executive search and leadership advisory.
Nicole Brigg is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Macquarie University in Sydney, with responsibility for one of Australia’s largest and most Asia-engaged international offices.She has over twenty years’ experience working in the Australian International Education sector and is a leader in the development of the China-Australia education relationship.
Cathryn Carver is the Executive General Manager, Client Coverage at NAB. In this role Cathryn has global responsibility for leading NAB’s relationship and servicing team focused on institutional and corporate client relationships across key industry sectors. Cathryn was previously Acting Chief Customer Officer – Corporate and Institutional Banking. Cathryn is Deputy Chair of The Australia-Sino One Hundred Year Agricultural and Food Safety Partnership (ASA100) and a member of Chief Executive Women.
