Asia Taskforce Final Report
The COVID-19 pandemic and complexity in Australia-China relations provides a rationale for greater economic engagement with Asia. Diversifying our trade partnerships is now an economic and geostrategic necessity and priority should be given to building stronger business connectivity with Japan, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Korea and India.
The report, a joint project by the Asia Society and Business Council’s Asia Taskforce, with knowledge partners PwC Australia and the University of Sydney Business School, provides a blueprint for Australia to successfully compete in the region.
The Taskforce believes that implementation of these actions will considerably enhance Australia’s chances of success in Asia:
- Adopt a “Team Australia” approach
- Play to our strengths
- Learn to navigate a more complex China
- Reboot Asia literacy
- Champion our rich Asia talent
The Asia Taskforce makes 24 recommendations for business, academia and government which, if implemented, will improve Australia's competitive position in the region.
About the Asia Taskforce
On Friday 5 October 2019, the Business Council of Australia and Asia Society Australia, together with Knowledge Partners PwC Australia and the University of Sydney Business School, formed a taskforce of senior leaders from the business, education and government sectors to examine how Australian companies and organisations can increase their presence and position in Asia to ensure our continued prosperity and deliver progress for future generations.
The Asia Taskforce is chaired by Mark van Dyck, Managing Director (Asia-Pacific), Compass Group. It is co-led by Jennifer Westacott, CEO of the Business Council of Australia, Philipp Ivanov, CEO Asia Society Australia, and Andrew Parker, Asia Practice Leader and Partner at PwC.
The taskforce examines how Australia can build and enhance its position with the powerhouse Asian economies in our proximity, diversify our economic partners, and prepare for a more strategically and economically competitive region.
The Taskforce released its final report A Second Chance on 7 April 2021, and eight discussion papers on specific sectors and countries throughout 2020 and 2021.
