Tomorrow's City Today

Pacific Cities Sustainability Initiative Forum 2013

Cities across the Pacific Rim are facing growing competition to create more livable cities to attract top talent and business investment while protecting the environment. Maintaining and improving quality of life in tomorrow’s cities is central to urban sustainability. The challenges posed by rapid urbanization and migration to urban areas also presents a wealth of opportunities for collaboration and innovation — not only for urban dwellers, but also for planners, policymakers, developers, city governments, and community groups. How can we create green, sustainable, healthy and livable cities for all?

To address these questions, the Pacific Cities Sustainability Initiative (PCSI) was created to study, share and showcase the urban sustainability strategies of communities from across the Pacific Rim. Launched in 2009 with the Centers for International Business (CIBER) of the USC Marshall School of Business andUCLA Anderson School of Management, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, the initiative is now a joint program of the Asia Society and the Urban Land Institute with support from leading organizations engaged in solving challenges associated with rapid urbanization throughout the region. PCSI convenes select thought leaders from business, government, and academia with the express aim of fostering new alliances, sharing innovative strategies, and showcasing effective practices.

PCSI is now preparing to launch its first Annual Forum, which in 2013 will take place in Asia. The Forum will bring together a small, select group of city leaders, architects, planners, policymakers , and other experts who are working to create tomorrow’s livable city. Topics to be addressed at the Forum include sustainable affordable housing, community networks, governance structures, and how the process of urbanization will shape Asian cities and the global marketplace for decades to come.

Entitled "Tomorrow’s City Today," the inaugural Forum will be held at Asia Society’s new Hong Kong Center from February 18-20, 2013. The 2013 Annual Forum will be the first event conducted as part of the new partnership between the Asia Society and the Urban Land Institute.
