Join Asia Society on Wednesday, October 6 for a town hall on the critical issues coming out of the U.S.'s withdrawal from Afghanistan, including what life under Taliban rule may look like for future generations, and how Afghans in the U.S. have reacted to recent developments. We will have a conversation with Tamim Asey, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Institute of War and Peace Studies (IWPS), Asia Society Asia 21 fellow, and former Deputy Minister for Policy and Strategy at the Ministry of Defense of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Barnett Rubin, Senior Fellow at New York University's Center on International Cooperation. Moderating this discussion will be Rina Amiri, independent policy and mediation advisor and a senior fellow at NYU’s Center for International Cooperation and a senior fellow at NYU’s Center for Global Affairs.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
Tamim Asey
Tamim Asey is the former Afghan Deputy Minister of Defense of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. He is a fellow at Asia Society and was a Fulbright scholar at Columbia University. Mr. Asey was also a former Government of Afghanistan official and taught at the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF). He is a regular contributor to Eurasia Review, The Diplomat, Foreign Policy Magazine, 8am Newspaper and appears on regular on national and international media to discuss political and economic developments in Afghanistan and Central Asia.
Barnett Rubin
Dr. Barnett R. Rubin is a Senior Fellow at CIC, where he previously directed the Afghanistan Pakistan Regional Program. He worked at CIC from 2000 to 2020. During 1994-2000 he was Director of the Center for Preventive Action, and Director, Peace and Conflict Studies, at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Rubin was Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for the Study of Central Asia at Columbia University from 1990 to 1996. Previously, he was a Jennings Randolph Peace Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace and Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale University.
From April 2009 until October 2013, Dr. Rubin was the Senior Adviser to the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in the U.S. Department of State. In November-December 2001 Rubin served as special advisor to the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan, during the negotiations that produced the Bonn Agreement. He subsequently advised the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan on the drafting of the constitution of Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Compact, and the Afghanistan National Development Strategy.
Rina Amiri (moderator)
Rina Amiri is currently an independent policy and mediation advisor and a senior fellow at NYU’s Center for International Cooperation and a senior fellow at NYU’s Center for Global Affairs.
Ms. Amiri brings over two decades of political expertise, advising and working with governments, the United Nations, and think tanks in various conflict settings in West and the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and Europe. Prior to her appointment at NYU, she served as a Senior Associate at Princeton’s Center for Innovations for Successful Studies. Prior to that she served as a member as a Senior Mediation Expert in the United Standby Team of Mediation Experts. Under the Obama Administration, she served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Ms. Amiri also served as a member of the United Nation’s Special Representative of the Secretary General’s political team in Afghanistan during the course of the implementation of the Bonn Agreement.
Ms. Amiri has provided political analysis and commentary in a number of outlets including MSNBC, PBS, CNN, and CSPAN, and has been published and provided commentary in the New York Times, Boston Globes, Al-Jazeera America, Foreign Affairs, and the Los Angeles Times. She has been recognized as 125 Women of Impact by Newsweek and is a life-long member of the Council of Foreign Relations.
