The Effect of COVID-19 on the Korean Economy
October 9, 2020 ㅡ Asia Society Korea's senior contributor Mason Richey invited Chong Hoon Park, Head of Korea Economic Research at Standard Chartered Bank Korea Limited, and Victoria Kim, the Seoul correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, to discuss about the impact of COVID-19 crisis on the Korean economy. The two speakers shared their views and prospects on the Korean economy based on their respective fields of expertise.
About the Guest Speakers
Chong Hoon Park
Chong Hoon Park joined Standard Chartered Korea in 2009 and currently heads Korea research team. In this position, he provides in-depth analysis on Korean economy to Standard Chartered Bank clients and business functions. Before joining the Bank, he has worked as a Senior Research Fellow/ Head of Telecommunication Policy at Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) for six years and as an Executive Vice President/ Head of Strategy and Government Relation at SK Broadband (former Hanaro Telecom) for four years in Seoul. Chong Hoon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a researcher and strategist.
Chong Hoon completed his doctorate degree specialising in international economics and development from Northwestern University.
Victoria Kim
Victoria Kim is the Seoul correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. Since joining the paper in 2007, she has covered state and federal courts, worked on investigative projects and reported on Southern California’s Korean community. She has previously written for the Associated Press out of South Korea and West Africa, as well as for the Financial Times in New York. Kim was raised in Seoul and graduated from Harvard University with a degree in history.

Mason Richey
Mason Richey is a senior contributing writer to Asia Society Korea and an associate professor of international politics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Seoul, South Korea). Dr. Richey has also held positions as a POSCO Visiting Research Fellow at the East-West Center (Honolulu, HI) and a DAAD Scholar at the University of Potsdam. His research focuses on U.S. and European foreign and security policy as applied to the Asia-Pacific. Recent scholarly articles have appeared (inter alia) in Pacific Review, Asian Security, Global Governance, and Foreign Policy Analysis. Shorter analyses and opinion pieces have been published in War on the Rocks, Le Monde, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, and Forbes, among other venues.
Dr. Richey received his Ph.D. from Binghamton University, New York.
