In earlier generations, Chinese women artists had a difficult time gaining attention and getting exhibited in the all boys' club of the Chinese art scene. But today, a new generation of women artists are emerging in full force. Some are addressing gender issues in fascinating, even feminist, ways. Others reject the whole notion of identity, choosing to venture out in new, experimental directions. Author and leading expert in Chinese contemporary art, Barbara Pollack will introduce the leaders in this generation such as Cao Fei, Lu Yang and Miao Ying, and discuss the work of many more who are contributing to this new dialogue about gender.

Barbara Pollack is the author of Brand New Art from China: A Generation on the Rise (2018) and The Wild, Wild East:  An American Art Critic's Adventures in China (2010). Ms. Pollack has been writing extensively on contemporary art since 1994 for publications including The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Artnews, the Village Voice, Washington Post and many others. A leading authority on Chinese contemporary art in the US, she has written numerous monographs for artists such as Li Songsong and Lin Tianmiao. Ms. Pollack has also curated shows including Tu Hongtao: A Timely Journey, opening at the Long Museum West Bund in November 2018 and the groundbreaking My Generation: Young Chinese Artists at the Tampa Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, St Petersburg in 2014 traveling to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the Orange County Museum of Art in 2015. An adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Ms.Pollack frequently lectures on contemporary art at universities and museums.
