The WHO estimates that 92% of the global population live in places where air quality does not meet its safety guidelines. Indeed, air quality is a cause for concern for Hong Kong residents, with air pollution levels 70% higher than the WHO recommendation. The Hong Kong Government in 2013 outlined various measures to tackle air pollution from power plants, land and sea transport. Less diesel vehicles is encouraged, while industry and individuals can also play their part by observing air pollution control laws and exercising best practices. Furthermore, cooperation between the governments of Hong Kong and Guangdong is also critical to ensure that regional pollution levels are brought under control, with regional emission reduction targets for 2015 and 2020, respectively. In the concluding forum in the second year of the Imagine 2060 series, experts explore best practices for Hong Kong and neighboring areas to continue to grow and prosper by 2060.
Imagine 2060 is a three-year global series co-organized by Asia Society and AECOM, which aims to inspire a new way of delivering the cities of tomorrow. Launched in 2017, the inaugural year focused on water, with a wide-ranging examination of how diverse paths taken by five global waterfront cities are shaping the quality of life for citizens in different ways and providing lessons for other cities. The 2018 theme is dedicated to air.
Opening Keynote Remarks | Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, Hong Kong SAR
Keynote | Mitigating Pollution through Disruptive Technologies
Smart technologies are increasingly playing a critical role in protecting the air and land from environmental pollution. Founded in 2007, XAG Co Ltd (previously known as XAIRCRAFT Technologies) is one of the world’s largest drone companies, specializing in agricultural UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) design, development, manufacturing and operation. It has successfully introduced UAS survey and crop-dusting services to millions of Chinese farmers. XAG utilizes the world’s leading UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology to help them manage their fields in more efficient ways, with the aim to reduce chemical usage, decrease water consumption and lessen chemical residues. In this TED-style talk, Justin Gong will elaborate on the ways in which new smart technologies can protect air and land from polluting elements.

Panel I | A Roadmap for Clean Air and a Livable Greater Bay Area
The Paris Agreement is a clarion call for governments, businesses and communities to work together towards a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment. While the Government has initiated action plans for Hong Kong, cooperation with its neighbors is also key to ensure pollution levels are brought under control with the Pearl River Delta. This session convenes local and Mainland-based experts to explore actionable solutions to ensure future generations can live and breathe the clean air enjoyed by their ancestors before them.
