Not only is July 15th the last day of our Love Long: Robert Indiana and Asia exhibition, but the perfect opportunity to spend a Sunday afternoon at our facilities with a cup of coffee and a discussion on how Hong Kong is becoming the city for public art. Although public art programs have been in place since the 90s, it has only been the past 10 years or so that the Hong Kong Government and companies have advocated the importance of Public Art. Our panelists for the afternoon’s discussion include Lesley Lau, responsible for initiating the display of several art projects all over Hong Kong, Andrew Mead, the Chief Architect (ARBUK) who oversees the Art in MTR programme and the design of MTR stations, Tse Ngan- Sum, a multi-media artist whose work focuses on abandoned environments reclaimed by nature, and Annie Wan, an artist who has showcased several of her sculptures in numerous local and overseas exhibitions. Kiri Sinclair will be moderating the discussion and the Q&A.

Lesley Lau received her Ph.D. degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She’s previously worked at Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Hong Kong Visual Art Centre (vA!) Later on in her career she founded the Art Promotion Office (APO) and Oi! Lau is an art museum curator and head of APO. She is responsible for initiating several public art projects all over public spaces in Hong Kong, including Seats. Together, Hi! Houses and Hi! Hill, etc.

Andrew Mead is a UK registered architect who specializes in planning, designing, and construction of rapid transit systems. He was in charge of designing over 200 metro and light rail stations in London, Toronto, Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong. He joined MTR in 2013 and has been important in raising MTR’s transit design standards. Andrew’s department manages the architectural and design aspect for all the new MTR stations, trains and transit facilities. He is also well known for his efforts in the critically acclaimed Art in MTR program. The artwork included are commissioned by local and overseas artists created for certain stations.

Tse Ngan- Sum is a graduate of the National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University, UK (MA #D Computer Animation) and Falmouth College of Arts, UK (BA Fine Art). Her work incorporates different types of media such as fine art, animation, digital image manipulation in post productions and many more. Tse's art has been featured in fashion and magazine editorials and public-site art installations in Hong Kong and London. Her most recent project was for the 'Swire Paper Tales' exhibition at Artistree, 2011 which presented Tse's sculptural moving image installation, 'The Crystal Palace’.

Annie Wan obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Fine Arts Department after she received her Diploma in Design and a Higher Certificate in Studio Ceramics from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Since then Wan has participated in various local and overseas exhibitions and has been an artist-in-residence at institutions in Japan, the United States, and Denmark. Not only has Wan devoted herself to art but researching a more conceptual approach to art. 

Kiri Sinclair is the Hong Kong born founder of Sinclair, the communication agency, which oversees topline operations and client strategies in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Sinclair and her company find solutions that help create significant value for her clients and motivates them to think outside the box in order to come up with creative and forward-thinking ideas.
