Ten years after the global financial crisis in 2008, the world economy at last seems to be enjoying a robust recovery. But reasonable growth has only followed massive monetary and fiscal stimulus, and major threats to sustainable growth remain. Lord Adair Turner, Chairman of The Institute for New Economic Thinking and former Chairman of the U.K.’s Financial Services Authority, will explore the potential drivers of future instability, and consider whether despite reasonable growth this year, the world should face the challenge of potential secular stagnation. 

Lord Adair Turner is Chairman of The Institute for New Economic Thinking since 2013. Prior to joining the Institute, he chaired the United Kingdom Financial Services Authority from 2008 to 2013, and played a leading role in the redesign of the global banking and shadow banking regulation as Chairman of the International Financial Stability Board’s major policy committee. A cross-bench member of the House of Lords since 2005, Lord Turner served as the first Chairman of the Climate Change Committee (2008-2012), and chaired the Pensions Commission (2003-2006) and Low Pay Commission (2002-2006). His latest book Between Debt and the Devil was published by Princeton in 2015 and has been translated into Chinese. He is a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Financial Studies in Frankfurt, and Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Cass Business School. More recently, Lord Turner was appointed Visiting Fellow at the People’s Bank of China School of Finance at Tsinghua University and Visiting Professor at the International Center for Islamic Finance in Kuala Lumpur. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.

Henny Sender is Chief Correspondent for international finance at the Financial Times, based in New York and Hong Kong. Before joining the FT in 2007, Ms. Sender was the Wall Street Journal’s Senior Special Writer for Money and Investing, covering private equity and hedge funds. Prior to this, she spent 10 years in Hong Kong, covering regional finance for WSJ Asia and the Far Eastern Economic Review. Ms. Sender was part of a team at the WSJ that won a Loeb award for coverage of the meltdown of Amaranth hedge fund. She is the author of The Kashmiri Pandits: A Study of Cultural Choice in North India. Ms. Sender holds a master’s degree from the Columbia University School of Journalism and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
