New Hall Art Collection, Murray Edwards College at the University of Cambridge (U.K.), is the largest collection of art works by women in Europe and dedicated to the advocacy of women artists. Curator Eliza Gluckman in collaboration with Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong has examined the contribution of women to the growing arts ecology in the region. The research looked at the past 50 years, although much of the data focuses on the contemporary picture of the past 20 years looking at representation of women in exhibitions and institutions.
At the heart of this research are conversations among three different artist peer groups (graduating in the 1970s, 1990s and late 2000s), and interviews with individual artists, curators and gallery owners. During this inaugural Women of Impact Series program, Gluckman will present her findings, specifically the significant generational differences for artists in Hong Kong, and their experiences of colonialism, arts funding and the regional interest in visual arts practice. She will also discuss the recurring questions that arise about representation and visibility in art history, public institutions and the market, every time a platform is raised to talk about "women artists."
At this time of monumental change for the visual arts in Hong Kong, as new institutions open, the research findings enable conversation and debate on the visibility of the many women who shape, support and create the vibrant arts ecology of Hong Kong.
The research is accompanied by an exhibition at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, from March 5 — 11, featuring works by 13 artists including Au Hoi Lam, Rosamond Brown, Irene Chou, Choi Yan Chi, Fang Zhaoling, Ho Sin Tung, Ko Sin Tung, Jaffa Lam Laam, Man Fung-yi, Ellen Pau, Angela Su, Nicole Wong and Doris Wong.
Eliza Gluckman is curator of the New Hall Art Collection at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, the largest collection of work by women in Europe, and A Woman’s Place Project (Day+Gluckman). She has an MA in Fine Art (University of Edinburgh) and Curating Contemporary Art (Royal College of Art) where she developed a specialized knowledge of South East Asian contemporary art. She has worked at SPACE Studios, the RSA, Parasol Unit and Asia House and as part of independent curatorial partnership Day+Gluckman for over 10 years, she programmed a central London gallery and curated Sinopticon, in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum and National Trust looking at contemporary art and chinoiserie. She is a trustee for Block 336, an artist-run space in Brixton, South London and a member of the North West Cambridge Public Art Panel.
