Participants included Duyeon Kim, adjunct senior fellow with the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security; Ankit Panda, Stanton senior fellow in the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; and Andrew Yeo, senior fellow and SK-Korea Foundation Chair in Korea Studies at Brookings Institution’s Center for East Asia Policy Studies. Meet Our Panelists
Mason Richey is a senior contributing writer to Asia Society Korea and an associate professor of international politics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Seoul, South Korea). Dr. Richey has also held positions as a POSCO Visiting Research Fellow at the East-West Center (Honolulu, HI) and a DAAD Scholar at the University of Potsdam.
His research focuses on U.S. and European foreign and security policy as applied to the Asia-Pacific. Recent scholarly articles have appeared (inter alia) in Pacific Review, Asian Security, Global Governance, and Foreign Policy Analysis. Shorter analyses and opinion pieces have been published in War on the Rocks, Le Monde, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, and Forbes, among other venues.
Dr. Richey received his Ph.D. from Binghamton University, New York.

Duyeon Kim is a Seoul-based adjunct senior fellow with the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security and columnist for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. She specializes in both regional and functional issues: the two Koreas, nuclear nonproliferation, East Asian relations, security, and negotiations.
She has written in leading publications including Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy. Kim is a frequent commentator on CNN and BBC among other networks, and quoted widely in global media including The Washington Post, The New York Times, Bloomberg, The Guardian, Yonhap News, and The Japan Times. Previously, she was senior advisor for Northeast Asia and Nuclear Policy at the International Crisis Group; associate in the nuclear policy and Asia programs at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; and senior fellow and deputy director of non-proliferation at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. Kim holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from Korea University, an M.S. in Foreign Service from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and a B.A. in English/Literature from Syracuse University. Ankit Panda is the Stanton Senior Fellow in the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. An expert on the Asia-Pacific region, his research interests range nuclear strategy, arms control, missile defense, nonproliferation, emerging technologies, and U.S. extended deterrence. He is the author of Kim Jong Un and the Bomb: Survival and Deterrence in North Korea (Hurst Publishers/Oxford University Press, 2020).
Panda was previously an adjunct senior fellow in the Defense Posture Project at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and a member of the 2019 FAS International Study Group on North Korea Policy. He has consulted for the United Nations in New York and Geneva on nonproliferation and disarmament matters, and has testified on security topics before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee and the congressionally chartered U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
Panda was a Korea Society Kim Koo Fellow, a German Marshall Fund Young Strategist, an International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue Young Leader, and a Carnegie Council on Ethics in International Affairs New Leader. He has worked at the Council on Foreign Relations and the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.
A widely published writer, Panda’s work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the Diplomat, the Atlantic, the New Republic, the South China Morning Post, War on the Rocks, Politico, and the National Interest. Panda has also published in scholarly journals, including Survival, the Washington Quarterly, and India Review, and has contributed to the IISS Asia-Pacific Regional Security Assessment and Strategic Survey. Andrew Yeo is a senior fellow and the SK-Korea Foundation Chair in Korea Studies at Brookings Institution’s Center for East Asia Policy Studies. He is also a professor of politics at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His latest book, State, Society and Markets in North Korea, is out now with Cambridge University Press.
Yeo is also the author or co-editor of four other books including Asia’s Regional Architecture: Alliances and Institutions in the Pacific Century (Stanford University Press 2019), North Korean Human Rights: Activists and Networks, (Cambridge University Press 2018, with Danielle Chubb); Living in an Age of Mistrust: An Interdisciplinary Study of Declining Trust in Contemporary Society and Politics and How to get it Back (Routledge Press 2017, with Matt Green), and Activists, Alliances, and Anti-U.S. Base Protests (Cambridge University Press 2011).
Yeo is currently working on a project that examines South Korea’s role in the Indo-Pacific region and how South Korea can support a rules-based order outside its traditional focus on Northeast Asia. He is also conducting research that examines marketization in North Korea and its impact on state-society relations. His other research interests address the Indo-Pacific strategies of the United States and its allies, Asia’s regional architecture and institutional change, U.S. grand strategy and force posture, Chinese influence in Southeast Asia, the role of narratives and discourse in U.S. foreign policy, and civil society and democracy.
Yeo’s scholarly publications can be found in International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of International Relations, Perspectives on Politics, Comparative Politics, Comparative Strategy, Journal of East Asian Studies, and International Relations of the Asia-Pacific among others. His other writings have appeared in the Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, the National Interest, the Diplomat, and 38 North and offered commentary in a variety of media outlets including MSNBC, Channel News Asia, CBS radio, Wisconsin Public Radio, Voice of America, RTHK-Hong Kong, Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the New York Times Magazine, South China Morning Post, Al Jazeera, Japan Times, Korea Times, Hankyoreh, Kyunghyang Shinmun, and Joongang Ilbo.
As part of the Bridging the Gap network, Yeo is a firm believer in connecting academic theory with policy relevant research. Yeo is a former term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the National Committee on North Korea. He was awarded the Young Faculty Scholar's Award from Catholic University in 2013. He is part of the first cohort of the Mansfield-Luce Asia Scholars Network (2020-21) and the first cohort of the Korea Foundation-Mansfield Foundation Scholar-Policy Nexus (2013-14). He is a two-time recipient of a U.S. Fulbright grant conducting research as a senior scholar in the Philippines in 2020, and as a graduate student in South Korea in 2005-06.
Yeo received his doctorate in government from Cornell University, and bachelor's in psychology and international studies magna cum laude from Northwestern University.
