About General Han Min-koo
General Han Min-Koo is the 36th Chairman of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff. Prior to assuming his current assignment, General Han served as the Army Chief of Staff.
General Han was born in Chungwon, North Choongcheong Province, on September 30th, 1951. After graduating from Cheongju High School in 1970, he entered the Republic of Korea Military Academy in 1971. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in March of 1975.
He received a Bachelor's Degree in Western History from Seoul National University in 1979 and a Master's Degree in Foreign Affairs and National Security Studies from Yonsei University in 1992. He went through an Army College program in 1984 and completed the Security Studies Program at the National Defense University in 1992.
General Han has served in various leadership positions. He served as the Chief of Staff and the Vice Chief of Staff of the Republic of Korea Army, and he has commanded the Capital Defense Command and the 53rd Infantry Division.
General Han's staff positions include Director General of the Policy Planning Bureau (MND), Director General of the International Policy Bureau (MND), Chief of the Strategic Planning Division (Army HQ), Chief of Staff of the Capital Corps, and Chief Secretary to the Army Chief of Staff.
General Han has been awarded numerous awards and decorations in recognition of his dedication and service including Orders of National Security Merit ‘Samil’, ‘Chunsu’, ‘Tongil’, and Legion of Merits from the U.S.
He is married to Mrs. Kwak, Jung Im, and they have one son and one daughter.
