Threads of Labor
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAlthough the Asian textile industry is considered to be the backbone of the global economy, it has historically been associated with poor working conditions and low wages. The plight of workers, however, has begun to improve internationally due to careful partnerships between governments, trade unions, and other stakeholders. But to completely empower workers, much is left to be done. Join us as Dr. Sanchita Banerjee Saxena, Executive Director of the Institute of South Asia Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, discusses her unique perspective on the issue and her new book, Made in Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka: The Labor Behind the Global Garments and Textile Industries.
Sanchita Banerjee Saxena is the Executive Director of the Institute for South Asia Studies and the Director of the Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Before that, she worked as the assistant director of Economic Programs at the Asia Foundation and was a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC in 2010 and 2014.
