What is the Future of Tibet?
HONG KONG, November 17, 2014 — Michael Buckley, author of Meltdown in Tibet, pointed out two main issues that blamed the Chinese government regarding its policies for Tibet — environmental damage caused after building dams and its failure to fulfil promises in improving the living standards of the Tibetans. The presentation was followed by a discussion with Zoher Abdoolcarim, editor of TIME International, at Asia Society Hong Kong Center.
Through his findings, Michael listed out the problems surrounding the construction of dams in Tibet including damage to the eco-system, decrease in protein supply and polluted and poisoned water sources. Judging from the situation today, the Chinese government only seemed to be taking advantage of Tibet without improving the living environment at the same time. Nowadays, Tibet still lacks the basic infrastructures of a modern city such as clinics, schools, and electricity supply.
