Kevin Rudd on Asia Rising
HONG KONG, March 12, 2015 - The Asia Rising Dialogue came to Hong Kong, beginning with a conversation between the Honorable C.H. Tung, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and former Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Honorable Kevin Rudd, President of the Asia Society Policy Institute and Former Prime Minister of Australia. Introduced by co-chairs of the Board of Trustees, Ronnie C. Chan and Henrietta H. Fore, the dialogue was moderated by Asia Society President and CEO Josette Sheeran.
In addition, Mr. Rudd moderated a dialogue with Ambassador Liu Jieyi, Permanent Representative of the P.R. of China to the U.N., who also took questions from an audience of 200 leaders from business, finance, politics and academia. Included in the audience were Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Government, Carrie Lam, and Asia Society Trustees. Participants tackled key issues relating to Asia’s rise in the spheres of economics, finance, culture, traditional and cyber security. They considered the lessons learned from the Global Financial Crisis as well as the challenges to reforming the U.N. Security Council. Chan Heng Chee, Ambassador-at Large, Singapore Foreign Ministry; Former Ambassador of Singapore to the United States; and Asia Society Trustee, summarized the findings at the close of the event. Held under the Chatham House Rule, remarks were not attributed to any individual, and the findings obtained from this series will be reported to world leaders, and will guide the agenda for a global gathering on Asia’s rise, which Asia Society plans to host in 2016.
