The Chinese Almanac - Decoded
HONG KONG, January 27, 2014 — Anyone who lives in Hong Kong must encounter the Tong Sing — the centuries-old repository of cultural information ranging from household tips to general medical remedies also known as the Chinese almanac. But it's the almanac's predictions of which days are auspicious or ominous for a wide range of activities that have made the annual publication a mainstay in Chinese homes.
Joanna C. Lee and Ken Smith (co-authors of the Pocket Chinese Almanac) along with geomancer Warwick Wong, discussed the roots of the almanac in agrarian Chinese culture, as well as its use in urban life today.
