The App Generation: What Are They Like?
HONG KONG, November 13, 2014 — The life of current young people is deeply influenced by digital media. They use electronic devices all the time. Professor Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education and co-author of The App Generation, held a luncheon presentation on the impact of digital media on current youth. He also compared the life between the current generation and before the digital era.
“For young people today, apps are just about everything,” remarked Professor Gardner, therefore, naming young people in this generation “The App Generation”.
His studies found that identity is important to young people, and teenagers nowadays “feel a real need to package themselves, especially in social media”. They are less likely to share their anxieties, doubts and fears with others because they want to look good in all aspects.
