VIEW EVENT DETAILSWhat Los Angeles – Gateway to Asia – Can Learn from Asia’s Urban Growth
Long the epitome of sprawl, Los Angeles is building upward and filling in. This push for urban density offers great promise and challenges for Angelenos’ quality of life. What is the path forward and what lessons can Los Angeles learn from Asia’s rapid urbanization?
Please join Asia Society Southern California for a high-level discussion about the future of Los Angeles featuring leading architects, urban planners and developers who can connect the dots between Asia’s experience and Los Angeles. The concept of “new towns,” or urban cores, has been critical to the growth of Hong Kong and major cities in China and Southeast Asia. Los Angeles faces similar issues: How to accommodate shifting populations, expand mass transit, renew old centers while developing housing that’s close to workplaces and preserve green space as part of creating sustainable living environments. Los Angeles is the natural venue to explore Asia’s lessons in the U.S. And, not surprisingly, much of the new urban investment is coming from Asia.
This program is part of Asia Society’s Pacific Cities Sustainability Initiative. It is sponsored by AECOM, a premier fully integrated global infrastructure firm headquartered in Los Angeles and publisher of Jigsaw City, which is based on decades of experience building “new towns” in Asia.
