On March 29, 2018, ASPI President Kevin Rudd discussed the recent meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing with Rosemary Church on CNN International.
The meeting between the two leaders has attracted a lot of media attention, but as Rudd underlines, the key question is whether there been any substantial change in North Korea’s preparedness to embrace the denuclearization agenda or is this “just a whole bunch of shadowboxing with North Korea’s strategic position not having changed at all.”
Considering North Korea’s successful diplomatic tactics over the last few months, Rudd’s biggest concern is that the Xi-Kim meeting could be “the beginnings of a lessening of Chinese resolve in support of UN Security Council resolutions and pressure against the North.” (6 min., 26 sec.)
