U.S. Has Been Tough in Trade Negotiations
Wendy Cutler on CNBC
On April 19, 2018, ASPI Vice President Wendy Cutler appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box to discuss the complexities of trade negotiations and the United States’ history with trade. She highlights the success the U.S. has had “opening markets through the years” by “being tough in trade negotiations,” pointing out that “the U.S. was the number one economy” when international trading rules were established.
Today, Cutler argues, developing countries need to “pony up and open their markets,” just as the United States once did. With regards to U.S. President Donald Trump's preference for bilateral deals, Cutler says its fine to use both approaches. She explains that multilateral trade negotiations can be “a lot more compelling” because when a coalition of countries insist on a change, it forces any country that is holding out to realize that it is “the outlier.” (3 min., 12 sec.)
