Trump has China’s Attention with Tariffs
Wendy Cutler on Bloomberg TV
As the U.S.-China trade dispute continued to intensify this week, ASPI Vice President Wendy Cutler spoke with Bloomberg's David Westin and Shery Ahn on Bloomberg Markets.
At the center of the escalating trade dispute is the U.S. claim that under China’s forced technology transfer policies, American and foreign companies are required to share their technology as a condition for investing in China. Though the Trump administration’s tariff announcements have “gotten their [China’s] attention,” Cuter believes that negotiating with China to reform such policies would be “more effective” if the U.S. brought other trade partners “with similar concerns” to the table.
The proposed $50 billion U.S. tariffs on imported Chinese goods will not go into effect until well after the May 22 close of a public comment period. Though Cutler thinks U.S. trade policymakers “did the best they could” in anticipating industry and stakeholder concerns, she expects some changes to the tariffs before they are implemented.
