China’s Cooperation with Southeast Asia to Support More Ambitious Clean Energy Transition by 2030
VIEW EVENT DETAILSFacilitating a rapid transition to clean energy is crucial for advancing the Paris climate goals and mitigating the worst impacts of climate change. It is even more critical for fast-industrializing economies in Southeast Asia, where the expansion of clean energy supply needs to be scaled up to ensure energy security and reliability while progressing the decarbonization agenda.
China has made a strong commitment to supporting Southeast Asian countries in their transition towards a clean and sustainable electricity future. To translate this commitment into actual progress, a range of programs and mechanisms have been put in place to support the expansion of renewable generation.
The Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI), in partnership with the Energy Foundation China (EFC), has initiated a project to understand how China can support Southeast Asia in its pursuit of a clean energy future.
This invite-only virtual program launches a new report, "China’s Cooperation with Southeast Asia to Support an Ambitious Clean Energy Transition by 2030," detailing key insights from the project, gathered from three online convenings and private consultations. Following an opening address by representatives from EFC and ASPI—including ASPI Director of Asia-Pacific Sustainability Alistair Ritchie and Director of China Climate Hub Li Shuo, the event will feature a presentation session that highlights key insights from the final report and a proposed Clean Prosperity Plan. The subsequent discussion session will facilitate dialogue among leading domain experts from the region, particularly focusing on practical opportunities for implementing the plan, identifying key stakeholders that need to be involved, and exploring potential mechanisms for mobilizing support from China and other countries.
