About Salaam Dunk
Salaam Dunk is a documentary about a women's basketball team at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS). These women come from all over Iraq to study at AUIS and many cannot even tell family that they attend an American university. Through traditional interviews and private confessional video diaries, Salaam Dunk follows the ethnically diverse AUIS women's basketball team as they discover what it means to be athletes. From the joy of their first win to the pain of losing the coach who started their team, the film gives a glimpse into an Iraq we don't see. Salaam Dunk is directed by David Fine.
Ryan Bubalo founded and coached the women's basketball team at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) while serving as an English instructor at AUIS. He has also taught English at the University of Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in Creative Writing and then gained his Master of Fine Art degree from Mississippi.
Sana Ghazi is a Research Fellow at Observer Research Foundation in Mumbai and is working on an analysis on the nuclear issue in Iran. She has previously served as an Adjunct professor at Utica College, New York and is interested in the analysis of social issues with gender and development lens and democratization, among other topics.
