PCSI Forum Manila
VIEW EVENT DETAILSFrom March 11-13, 2014, the Pacific Cities Sustainability Initiative (PCSI) will convene its second Annual Forum, "Creating Livable and Resilient Cities," in Manila, Philippines. Established in 2009, PCSI is now a joint initiative of Asia Society and Urban Land Institute, and aims to foster a collaborative dialogue and the sharing of urban sustainability strategies between communities around the Asia-Pacific region.
This year's Forum will convene a group of more than 100 urban sustainability experts from across the globe for an invitation-only leadership dialogue focusing on identifying contemporary urban sustainability challenges, and exploring promising new approaches to creating cities that are both resilient and livable. Through site-visits, keynotes, panels, and problem-solving workshops, the Forum will provide participants with an opportunity to exchange best practices and share lessons learned. You may view a draft of the Agenda on our Manila Forum webpage.
PCSI is pleased to host this year's Forum in Manila, Philippines, with the support of Asia Society Philippines Center and Urban Land Institute Asia Pacific. Manila and other major urban centers across the Asia-Pacific are developing rapidly but have struggled to implement long-range, people-oriented urban planning strategies. Severe storms and typhoons are a regular and growing threat, especially in the Philippines where the latest storm, Super Typhoon Haiyan, was one of the country’s worst natural disasters. In the face of this challenge, Asia-Pacific cities are struggling to develop housing and transit infrastructure that can stand up to extreme weather. Balancing the need for urban resiliency with a focus on enhancing livability remains a fundamental challenge to urban development in Manila and beyond.
To address this challenge, the Forum aims to uncover innovative approaches that could be applied locally in the Philippines and could also be scaled globally. By evaluating the Philippines’ experience with rapid urban population growth and extreme weather events, the Forum seeks to contribute to an understanding of how to create more sustainable, resilient, and livable cities in an age of increasing climate uncertainty.
The Forum will kick off with a special keynote address open to the public on the evening of Tuesday, March 11. The public event will feature insights on how cities can recover from and prepare future disasters, and will feature Senator Panfilo Lacson, the Philippines' newly appointed "rehabilitation czar," and Indonesian Minister Kuntoro Mankusubroto, who led rehabilitation efforts in the Aceh region from 2004-2009. Please stay tuned for more information coming soon on how to register for this special public event on the Asia Society Philippines website.
