China Will Retaliate Against Trump Tariffs
Wendy Cutler on BBC World News
On March 22, 2018, hours before U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of sweeping tariffs on Chinese imports, ASPI Vice President Wendy Cutler joined BBC World News to discuss U.S.-China trade tensions. The Trump administration is implementing the tariffs, estimated at about $60 billion, in response to China’s alleged practice of stealing American technology and intellectual property.
Cutler notes that the announcement comes as the “temperature is rising on both sides,” and the Chinese have made very clear that they are “going to retaliate right away.” Cutler has previously observed that U.S. tariffs, such as the recently-announced duties on foreign steel and aluminum have the potential to upset the United States’ economic relationships not just with China but with other partners around the world. These new actions, she warns, will be “the opening shots in what could turn out to be a trade war.” (6 min., 30 sec.)
