China’s rise has presented fundamental challenges for the geopolitical and geo-economic interests of the United States. The relationship between the two countries — the world’s two most powerful — is volatile and conflict could be the outcome. But it is not inevitable.
The president of the Asia Society and the Asia Society Policy Institute Kevin Rudd (a former prime minister of Australia) has recently published a new book on U.S.-China relations, titled "The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the U.S. and Xi Jinping's China." In his book, Kevin Rudd proposes a framework of what he calls “Managed Strategic Competition”, by which the United States and China might prevent competition from turning into a crisis.
The Asia Society India Centre and the Asia Society Policy Institute present a book discussion between Kevin Rudd, President of the Asia Society and former Prime Minister of Australia, and Prof. C. Raja Mohan, Senior Fellow, Asia Society Policy Institute, Delhi, to mark the launch of Rudd’s book in India. The discussion aims to delve into some key ideas that have shaped the book, locating them within an Indian context: should the two powers fail to find a peaceful resolution, how will the global world order shape up? What would “Managed Strategic Competition” entail and how can the two countries increase cooperation in certain areas? And what will the future of U.S.-China relations mean for India?
Copies of the book will be available for sale on the night.
Kevin Rudd became President and CEO of Asia Society in January 2021 and has been president of the Asia Society Policy Institute since January 2015. He served as Australia's 26th Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010, then as Foreign Minister from 2010 to 2012, before returning as Prime Minister in 2013. As Prime Minister, he led Australia’s response during the Global Financial Crisis, reviewed by the IMF as the most effective stimulus strategy of all member states. Australia was the only major developed economy not to go into recession. Mr. Rudd co‑founded the G20 to drive the global response to the crisis, which in 2009 helped prevent the crisis from spiraling into depression. As Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mr. Rudd was active in global and regional foreign policy leadership. As ASPI'S President he chaired an international panel which produced an ASPI report entitled on the development of long-term security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, entitled Preserving the Long Peace in Asia.
