2021 Education Summit: Asia Society Future Global Leaders
July 30, 2021 — At Asia Society Northern California's education summit, Roya Mahboob and Somaya Faruqi from the Afghan Girls Robotics Team; Mina Fedor, founder of AAPI Youth Rising; and Rahul Yates, founder and executive director of HumSub GlobalTEEN discuss the work being done by their organizations, the role social media plays in amplifying their messages, and how COVID-19 has impacted their work. The session was moderated by Wenchi Yu, head of global public policy and social impact at VIPKid, and an Asia 21 Young Leader from the class of 2011.
Mahboob talked about the struggles she has encountered as a female working in tech as well as her concerns about U.S.-Afghanistan relations, Fedor discussed the One/180 Pledge, an initiative led by AAPI Youth Rising that asks for one day of every school year to be dedicated to AAPI history and culture; and Yates addressed his experience growing up multiracial in the United States and the importance of representation.
