Should U.S. Take Kim Jong Un's Invitation Seriously?
Kevin Rudd on CNN Today
On March 8, 2018, ASPI President Kevin Rudd spoke with CNN Today about the planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.
Rudd believes that this development is the result of “a lot of direct and indirect diplomacy” done by South Korean officials with their counterparts in Pyongyang. While there is a lot of skepticism about negotiating with North Korea, Rudd points out that in diplomacy, one never “slams a door shut, when it appears to have creaked open just a bit.” Because “this one has creaked open quite a lot,” Rudd argues that it is best for the U.S. to take up North Korea’s offer with “eyes wide open.” (1 min., 20 sec.)
