Kevin Rudd: Give Diplomacy a Shot in U.S.-North Korea Summit
Interview on CNN
On June 11, 2018 ASPI President Kevin Rudd spoke with CNN’s Ana Cabrera about what the soon to begin U.S.-North Korea summit in Singapore can realistically achieve. Trump’s move to “unilaterally announce his preparedness to have a summit” with Kim was “a departure from the classic American playbook” which, Rudd says, generally sets preconditions for such meetings first.
While Trump’s “gut instinct” approach to the summit is unconventional, Rudd thinks that the summit serves as a gauge for whether “a basis for stage 1 trust can be built.” Once some trust is established, “professional negotiators and diplomats” can then begin the “exhausting process of working out each element of North Korea’s nuclear supply chain.” (4 min., 38 sec.)
Let's see what unfolds on Tuesday at the #TrumpKimSummit. But it's likely to be the start of long and complicated process of negotiation. I spoke to @AnaCabrera @cnni ahead of the #SingaporeSummit @AsiaPolicy https://t.co/jYlvuS1YJ1
