On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, Asia Society Northern California and the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology hosted "Two Innovation Dragons: China and India." Executive Director Margaret Conley of Asia Society Northern California welcomed everyone to the program. Moderator Dr. Kirti Gupta, Vice President of Technology & Economic Strategy at Qualcomm, Inc., briefly introduced the topic of discussion and then Dr. Amit Kapoor. Prior to the discussion, Kapoor, who traveled from India, gave a Keynote Address. Kapoor recently authored The Age of Awakening: The Story of the Indian Economy Since Independence (2019).
Following the Keynote Address, panelists discussed the challenges and what the two countries can learn from each other in sectors including biotech and high tech as related to intellectual property. In addition to Kapoor and Gupta, panelists included Mark Cohen, director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology Asian IP Project; Hemal Shah, director of India and emerging markets for the Global Innovation Policy Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. Kenneth Fong, Founder and Chairman of Kenson Ventures, LLC. Following the Q&A from the audience, Cohen closed out the program.
