Unlocking the Potential of Hong Kong's Startup Ecosystem - Recap

A Comprehensive Analysis of Funding, Trends, and Challenges

February 16, 2023  — Asia Society Northern California hosted an online virtual discussion on 'Unlocking the Potential of Hong Kong's Startup Ecosystem: A Comprehensive Analysis of Funding, Trends, and Challenges' with Edith Yeung, General Partner, Race Capital. The discussion was moderated by Jacko Tsang, Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office.

Edith unveiled her comprehensive Hong Kong Internet Report, which provides an in-depth and wide-ranging examination of Hong Kong's startup scene. The report delves into the opportunities and obstacles facing the Hong Kong startup ecosystem, including the most well-funded startups, funding rounds, and venture investors. Additionally, it analyzes trends and offers recommendations. The report also addresses the challenges facing Hong Kong such as the outflow of tech talent to other countries and the lack of investment in Hong Kong startups by Hong Kong investors.

Jacko shared the following websites containing background information and schemes: Hong Kong Top Talent Pass Scheme, Global STEM Professorship Scheme,  RAISe+ Scheme ($1.2 billion USD new scheme has been announced to support at least 100 university research teams with potential to become start-ups to promote commercialization of outstanding R&D outcomes), InnoHK research laboratory clusters, Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (Amendment) Ordinance 2022 (includes regulation of virtual assets exchanges), Hong Kong Adventures – Great Outdoors, Hong Kong Arts Scene.

We've captured the event on video and will be sharing it here and on our YouTube channel in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
