Symposium: The Cosmopolitan Vision of the Gu ge Court (Complete)
NEW YORK, May 5, 2018 — Despite its geographic isolation on the high western Tibet plateau, the Kingdom of Gu was an essential conduit between Indian and Tibetan Buddhist traditions and Jesuit missionaries. In this paper, "Unknown Tibet" guest curator Deborah Klimburg-Salter examines paintings from the Gu ge court that display a sophisticated visual rhetoric, incorporating disparate elements from Kashmiri India to the Gelugpa monastic world of central Tibet.
