To Hell and Back: Performing Hell
NEW YORK, April 15, 2023 — In the third panel discussion of To Hell and Back symposium, a panel of scholars in the fields of culture, arts, and anthropology discusses the role of performing arts in making the underworlds seem real. Speakers include Matthew Isaac Cohen, professor of Dramatic Arts at the University of Connecticut; Laurel Kendall, curator of Asian Ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History; and Hank Glassman, Janet and Henry Richotte 1985 professor of Asian Studies at Haverford College. To Hell and Back is an interdisciplinary symposium that explores artistic expressions of the afterlife across religious traditions in Asia, presented in conjunction with the Asia Society Museum's exhibition Comparative Hell: Arts of Asian Underworlds.
