To Hell and Back: Hell and the Desire for Spiritual Transformation
NEW YORK, April 15, 2023 — In the first panel discussion of To Hell and Back symposium, religious scholars discuss the different portrayals of hell across religions and cultures. Speakers include Ismail Fajrie Alatas, assistant professor of Middle Eastern Studies at New York University; Sonam Kachru, assistant professor of Religious Studies at Yale University; and Subhashini Kaligotla, associate professor at the Department of Art History and Archaeology of Columbia University. To Hell and Back is an interdisciplinary symposium that explores artistic expressions of the afterlife across religious traditions in Asia, presented in conjunction with the Asia Society Museum's exhibition Comparative Hell: Arts of Asian Underworlds.
