Japan’s Foreign Policy and Global Positioning: Choices, Challenges, and Risks
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAsia Society Policy Salon Tokyo
Japan has got what it takes to be a leading power in shaping global affairs in general, Asia Pacific relations in particular. Japan-US relations are the obvious center of gravity, but the density of Japan’s economic integration into Asia Pacific allow for great influence and strategic leadership that goes beyond just being the “unsinkable aircraft carrier for Washington”. What is Japan’s role in the world? Can Japan be a “mediator” between America and China? How can the forces of Japan soft-power and Japan hard-power become a more effective tool for regional stability? Why is Japan not more respected on the global stage?
Come join us for a discussion with one of the world’s leading global affairs experts, the Financial Times’ Gideon Rachman. Gideon has been spending several months in Japan and will share his insights and perceptions of Japan’s role in the world.
