Art for Breakfast: A Conversation with Artist, Eugene Kangawa

Art for Breakfast: Everything Can Change/ With Imagination—A Conversation with Artist, Eugene Kangawa

In 2021, Eugene Kangawa became the youngest artist in history at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo to do a solo show, EUGENE STUDIO After the Rainbow. Born in the United States in 1989, his paintings and installations are making an impact inside and outside Japan. What are Kangawa’s motivations and where does he get his inspirations?

In this installment of Art for Breakfast this September, Kangawa will speak about his journey as an artist. He will share his turning points of how we came to be through his works as “Image/ Imagine”, where all stages of the works were created in complete darkness. His creative base since 2020 is EUGENE STUDIO. The space was designed by the artist and his team which has become a medium for embodying his aesthetics.

Please join us to get insights into Kangawa’s multifaceted works that are attracting collectors and museums. Get to know the artist and expand your imagination.

Eugene Kangawa was born in the United States in 1989 and is currently based in Japan. He is known for his conceptual and self-reductive paintings and installations. In 2021-22, his exhibition "EUGENE STUDIO After the Rainbow" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo made him the youngest artist in history to receive a solo show at the Museum, which has previously held retrospectives on artists like Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono.

He has participated in various group exhibitions, including "de-sport" (2020) at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and "89+" (2014) at the Serpentine Gallery, among others.

His early activities were featured in the book "The Age of Art × Technology" (written by Daisuke Miyatsu, Kobunsha Shinsho) in 2017, where he was recognized as one of the four leading Japanese artists alongside teamLab and others.

Visit his studio’s website and Instagram for more information.
