Diwali Lights Up Asia Society: Family Day

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights and New Year, is a time to celebrate good fortune, family, and friendships. Celebrate with performances and arts and crafts inspired by Diwali.

1:15 pm Bollywood and Bhangra Dance with Bollywood Axion
Come and lighten up with some energetic Bollywood and Bhangra dance performances by Bollywood Axion of New York City and learn some fun moves from Bollywood Choreographer Pooja Narang yourself! Get into the spirit of Diwali by dancing with us!

2:15 pm Indian Music with Raga Kids!
Raga Kids introduces kids of all ages to Indian Classical Music through group sing-alongs and interactive songs featuring Indian folk songs, Ragas and original music featuring the Indian musical scale and the language of the tabla! Come check out Raga Kids and learn about what makes Raga music different, but also similar enough to hear some familiar songs too! Featuring guitar, tabla, bansuri and singing in multiple languages, Raga Kids is a great way for little ones get familiar with the musical instruments and sounds of Indian music!

3:15 pm Storytelling through Movement with Kathak dancer Parul Shah
Kathak dancer Parul Shah will perform a movement workshop in the spirit of the Diwali festival. The dance features intricate rhythmic footwork, mime and storytelling through hand gestures called mudras. Try some rhythmic patterns and explore how you can build a story using hand gestures and facial expressions.

1pm-4 pm Ongoing Activities: arts and crafts inspired by Diwali - Rose Room: 8th Floor
• Make your own Diya! During Diwali, people light small clay lamps called Diyas to symbolize the light of knowledge and goodness. Learn how to make your own clay Diya to put by your window at night!
• Temporary Tattoos! Come and get elaborate henna tattoos on your hands, arms or even your feet!
• Rangoli Making: Rangolis are patterned floor decorations which are thought to bring luck. Try your hand at rangoli making using colored sand, beans and rice!
• And much more!
