AsiaConnect Briefing: Now That U.S. & Iranian Officials Are Talking, What's Next?
VIEW EVENT DETAILSOn November 24, the United States and its P5+1 partners (Britain, China, France, Germany, and Russia) reached an initial nuclear agreement with Iran. The first-stage deal freezes key elements of Iran's nuclear program in exchange for limited sanctions relief and provides negotiators with a six-month time frame to work toward a comprehensive and lasting accord.
The ongoing negotiation process offers the prospect of a new relationship between the United States and Iran following 34 years of estrangement. Yet, even its strongest supporters describe the agreement as only a first step with many challenges ahead.
The second convening of our new AsiaConnect series will focus on the details of the agreement and the prospects ahead for U.S.-Iran relations. Hossein Mousavian, former Iranian nuclear negotiator and now a fellow at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School, and Suzanne DiMaggio, Asia Society's Vice President of Global Policy Programs and Director of the Society's Iran Initiative, will join us as our guest speakers. After their remarks, they will take questions from callers.
AsiaConnect is a monthly telephone briefing series on pressing issues in Asia and U.S.-Asia relations. The AsiaConnect series is made possible through the generous support of Asia Society Trustee Mitch Julis.
SPEAKERS:
Hossein Mousavian served as Iran's lead nuclear negotiator (2003-05), head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Iran's National Security Council (1997-2005), and Iran's Ambassador to Germany (1990-97). Currently a Visiting Research Scholar at Princeton University, he is the author of The Iranian Nuclear Crisis: A Memoir.
Suzanne DiMaggio is Vice President of Global Policy Programs at Asia Society, and leads the Society's Iran Initiative. As Vice President of UNA-USA, she directed a U.S.-Iran Track II dialogue from 2002-2007, which served as one of the few bridges facilitating sustained, face-to-face discussions between Americans and Iranians during that period.
