Pre-Election Concerns in the Philippines
“Three weeks ahead of the May 10 Philippine elections, major questions remain regarding organization and quality of the election process. Current President Gloria Arroyo is making a series of politically charged decisions about presidential appointments and prosecutions in Mindanao, and the government’s ability to carry out the first automated elections in the country’s history are causing major concerns. The prospects for election related uncertainty remain extremely high,” says Asia Society Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl, who was recently in the Philippines as part of a pre-election delegation organized by the National Democratic Institute.
