On the Ground in Jakarta -- Asia Awaits President Obama
“Although President Obama's decision to delay and shorten his trip to Indonesia may have made sense in terms of U.S. domestic politics, it is yet another lost opportunity for the president to capitalize on his immense popularity in this important nation,” says Asia Society Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl, who is in Jakarta through March 17. “From Jakarta, this delay looks to many like further evidence that America can no longer get its act together. With Chinese influence continually gaining in the region, America is no longer in the position it once was to behave as if there are no other suitors.”
