Challenges Ahead of Afghanistan's Parliamentary Vote
“The start of 2010 provides another opportunity to look at the monumental challenges facing the United States and its allies in Afghanistan,” says Asia Society Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl. “With no new Afghan cabinet in place, the United Nations demanding a major overhaul of Afghan electoral institutions before the fast approaching May parliamentary elections, and Taliban attacks on the increase, it is hard to see from today’s vantage point how President Obama’s 18-month timetable for visible signs of progress can be achieved.”
Jamie, who served as an election observer in Kabul, was Project Director for Asia Society’s task force report "Back from the Brink: A Strategy for Stabilizing Afghanistan-Pakistan.” He is based in New York.
