US and China VPs Schooled in International Studies [Photos]
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping visited Asia Society’s International Studies Learning Center in Los Angeles on the last day of the Chinese official’s U.S. tour.
Xi, who spoke with high school students learning Chinese, lauded their Mandarin skills, saying it was important to learn the culture as well as the language to avoid misunderstandings. But there was little misunderstanding when senior Christian Chavez asked, in both Chinese and English, how Xi manages his job and life. With all the meetings and traveling, "it's like Mission Impossible," Xi joked.
Biden told another class of students that the U.S.-China relationship is the single most important relationship the country has in the 21st century. He added that he and U.S. President Barack Obama believe that the most significant factor in improving U.S.-China relations is increasing educational opportunity for American students in China.
After touring the school, Biden’s parting words were, "You are an impressive group of students. Thank you for making America look so good."
