School Visits

Requires advance registration and separate fee

Optional school visits to Chinese language and culture programs in the greater San Diego area give participants the opportunity to visit elementary and secondary schools, with a choice of different student age groups and proficiency levels (as space allows). These programs have a track record of high-quality instruction and student achievement.

School visits require advance registration and a separate fee of $135 for each route. Departure and return times vary by route, but in general, groups will depart the hotel between 7-8 AM and return to the hotel between 2:30-3:30 PM. Please note that preconference workshops and school visits run concurrently on Thursday, May 9, 2019.

Route 1A: E3 Civic High School & Riverview International Academy ($135)

E3 Civic High is a four-year public charter school enrolling 460 scholars in grades 9–12. The school opened in the fall of 2013 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 2016. E3 Civic High is accredited by the Western Association of Secondary Schools and holds membership in the College Board.

Riverview International Academy is a K-5 public school located in Lakeside, California. It is one of the most innovative immersion programs in San Diego County. The success of our program, a unique Mandarin-Spanish-English trilingual model, has attracted schools from across the nation and around the world to visit our classrooms to see, firsthand, the progress our students are making every day.


Route 1B: Riverview International Academy & E3 Civic High School ($135)

Riverview International Academy is a K-5 public school located in Lakeside, California. It is one of the most innovative immersion programs in San Diego County. The success of our program, a unique Mandarin-Spanish-English trilingual model, has attracted schools from across the nation and around the world to visit our classrooms to see, firsthand, the progress our students are making every day.

Route 2A: Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary & Pacific Beach Middle School ($135) 

Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary is a Kinder – 5th grade Mandarin Immersion program.  By incorporating the Ancient Chinese Six Arts into the school's curriculum, students develop the ability to use their knowledge of diverse cultures and learn the Mandarin language in an authentic way. Barnard students have access to a complete, standards-based Mandarin language immersion curriculum from kindergarten through 5th grade. Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary is a Confucius Classroom School of the Confucius Institute at San Diego State University. It is also a California Distinguished School, and a California Honor Roll school.

Pacific Beach Middle School is a public 6th-8thgrade International Baccalaureate World School. The Mandarin program highlights include:

  • one-way Mandarin Immersion from 6-8th grade
  • authorized International Baccalaureate World School
  • balanced program of international education including Mandarin language immersion courses, and Individuals, Society and Art (history/social science) courses taught in Mandarin
  • part of the San Diego Unified School District’s Mission Bay Cluster Mandarin Immersion Pathway (2018-2019 prek-9th grade under development to expand to prek-12 grade by 2021)

Route 2B: Pacific Beach Middle School & Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary ($135)

  • one-way Mandarin Immersion from 6-8th grade
  • authorized International Baccalaureate World School

Route 3: Adobe Bluffs Elementary School & Mission Bay High School ($135)

Adobe Bluffs Elementary School is a transitional kindergarten to 5th gradepublic school in Poway Unified School District. Some Mandarin program highlights include:

  • Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program (Kindergarten) Year 1
  • Foreign Language for Elementary Schools (FLES) Year 3
  • Foreign Language for Elementary Parents (FLEP) Year 2
  • Annual Lunar New Year celebration since 2015

Recently Adobe Bluffs was awarded the prestigious International Confucius Classroom of the year, the only elementary school out of 148 countries to be recognized as the best Mandarin language and Culture program in the world.

Mission Bay High School (MBHS) offers the culminating chapter of San Diego Unified School Districts Mandarin immersion and world language program. MBHS is an IB World School which values diversity and language development for all learners. Mission Bay has offered Mandarin for the last four years and the program continues to evolve as the program grows. During the visit MBHS will have classroom visits, teacher and student information sessions and the opportunity for questions and answers about our journey as we have developed our Mandarin program.  


Route 4: Tierra Del Sol Middle School & El Capitan High School ($135) 

Tierra del Sol Middle School, located in Lakeside, California, provides students with the amazing and rare opportunity to continue their rigorous middle school Spanish and Mandarin language immersion courses after the K-5 immersion program. We are committed to prepares our diverse students to become global citizens who will lead in the globalized community of the 21st Century.   

El Capitan High School is part of the Grossmont Union High School District. We offer the Global Language and Leadership Program (GLLP), which is a dual language immersion program in Spanish and/or Mandarin. Students who demonstrate proficiency in both languages, in addition to English, can earn the GUHSD Seal of Triliteracy on their diploma. We offer three Career Technical (CTE) Pathways: Building Trades & Construction, "Project Lead the Way" Computer Science, and Agriculture & Natural Resources. In addition, our MedTech pathway gives students the opportunity to learn the application of medicine through NGSS-aligned science curriculum. We have a robust Advanced Placement (AP) program which offers 17 AP courses.
