The Asia Society Japan Center Arts Committee is delighted to invite Frank Feltens, The Japan Foundation Assistant Curator of Japanese Art at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art to our virtual Arts for Breakfast 2020 this September.
The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery together form the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asia Art. Located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, the museums have been a center for learning about the cultures of Asia and their art since the opening of the Freer Gallery in 1923. Through the lens of the Japanese collections in the Freer Gallery, this webinar will look at the museum’s layered history, the formation of its Japan collection, and its role in our own time. We will explore the circumstances of the Freer’s founding, its architecture and collections, together with recent displays of Japanese art.
