Asia Society Policy Salon Tokyo is honored to host Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on July 25, 2022. Governor Koike was elected as the first female governor of Tokyo in 2016, and her fearless, determined and visionary leadership has elevated Tokyo to become one of the most admired global mega cities.

In this session, Governor Koike will share her insights and discuss her vision: Building upon the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, with the principles of diversity, inclusion and sustainability at the heart; Tokyo is working toward realizing not only a Sustainable Recovery post Covid-19, but creating a city in which everyone can reach their full potential. Furthermore, Governor Koike will explore what is needed for Tokyo to overcome the challenges it faces and to be a thriving city; attractive to all the world.

Governor Koike brings a wealth of experience, from being a leading newscaster, to Lower House politician, to Defense Minister, to Tokyo Governor. She is a true Game Changer and Asia Society honored her with that award in 2019. Like no one else, Governor Koike knows what it takes to actually create a diverse, inclusive and sustainable next-stage Japan.

This event will be conducted in-person and online.
Participation is for members and guests only. Registration is required.
There is an in-person guest fee of 5,000 yen. Online participation is free.


 

Speaker Bio

Koike Yuriko, Governor of Tokyo
Koike Yuriko became Tokyo’s first female governor in 2016 and was re-elected for a second term in 2020. As governor, Ms Koike is proactively advancing numerous initiatives, including those focused on empowering women in society and eliminating child-care waitlists to create a work-friendly environment for women.

Ms Koike was elected to the House of Councillors in 1992 and to the House of Representatives in 1993, where she served for a total of eight terms. She held several cabinet posts, including Minister of the Environment and Minister of Defense. As Environment Minister, Ms Koike introduced the Cool Biz campaign to encourage workers to wear light and comfortable attire during the summer months.

Before entering national politics, she worked as a newscaster covering economic issues. Ms Koike graduated from Cairo University, Egypt.
