The New Framework for Mandarin Language Education in PreK-Grade 12 Schools in the United States
As part of Asia Society’s ongoing commitment to Asian language and culture education, we are pleased to present A New Framework for Mandarin Language Education in PreK-Grade 12 Schools in the United States. This paper, written by Dr. Shuhan Wang in consultation with national experts in language and general education, provides a fresh perspective on Mandarin education in light of the unique technological and socio-cultural shifts of our era. Other World Languages may apply this framework and develop narratives to explain and support the learning of their languages.
Blending insights from studies on global competence, language education, bilingualism and biliteracy development, cognitive development, and general education, this paper aims to provide educators with practical suggestions on establishing language programs and strategies on curriculum, instruction, and assessment design. In addition to educators, we hope policymakers, parents, and other stakeholders find value in this paper as they develop and implement their educational plans for the youth in their communities.
